Upward Basketball & Cheer

Our host facility, First United Methodist Church, is also a host for Upward Basketball and Cheerleading. Established in 1995, Upward Sports is the world’s largest Christian youth sports provider, with the mission of: “Promoting the Discovery of Jesus Through Sports.” (Read more about Upward here.)

  • 6:00-7:00 p.m. (A-L)
  • 7:00-8:00 p.m. (M-Z)

Mandatory Evaluations (6th-7th)

Players must attend a Mandatory Evaluation on Thursday, October 26th, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at First Baptist Church.​

Essentials: “A Tea Party for the King”

Throughout the school year, we will be using the blog to showcase some of the writing efforts of our Essentials students.

Essentials is a comprehensive language arts program for students 9-12 years of age. In addition to an intensive study of English grammar and math drills, Essentials students will tackle Institute for Excellence in Writing‘s (IEW) curriculum for history-based writing assignments.

Below is a paper on the Boston Tea Party, written by a third-year Essentials student (age 12).

A Tea Party for the King

On a freezing December evening in the year 1773, the streets of Boston, Massachusetts, were filled with people. Among them was Paul, who was ten years old. His older brother, who belonged to the Sons of Liberty, announced that something exciting was about to happen. Three ships loaded with British tea were docked in Boston Harbor. Paul could scarcely wait to find out what was about to happen.

As Paul stood in the streets, he thought about what his brother had told him. The colonists were refusing to buy British goods because the British were charging harsh taxes on them. The colonists didn’t think the British had any right to tax them, so they tried to send the tea back to England. Unfortunately, the Royal Governor of Boston steadfastly refused to let them return the tea, and told them the King’s orders must be obeyed. The tea must be unloaded by December 16th — that very day.

The crowd began to stir restlessly. Pushing through the throngs of people, almost one hundred Indians appeared on the dock — but they weren’t Indians at all! They were the Sons of Liberty, cleverly disguised as Mohawk Indians. Their cheeks were painted with red and blue stripes, and their faces were covered with soot. Wham! The brave Bostonians boldly busted open each box, and poured the tea into the harbor. The crowd shouted approvingly: “Let’s tell King George we will not pay his taxes anymore.” Even as the Indians disappeared into the night, Paul knew that King George would hear of the Boston Tea Party, and he feared the King would be furious.

Pioneer Days at Har-Ber Village

Friday, October 6, 2017 – 10:00am to 3:30pm

W 20th Rd, Grove, OK

Bring the whole family and join us for an all day event – Pioneer Days at Har-Ber Village in Grove, OK.
Volunteers demonstrate skills that made our pioneer ancestors self-reliant: spinning, weaving, processing flax plants into linen, dyeing wool, flint knapping, sausage making, hearth cooking and baking, quilting, candlemaking, heirloom gardening, blacksmithing, tinsmithing and more.  Visit with living history reenactors to explore early medical care, events of the Mexican War and pioneer stories. Many hands-on activities will allow younger visitors to experience pioneer life first-hand. Create a quilt block. Churn butter. Grind corn. Make a candle. Make sausage. Wash laundry on a scrub board. Weave on a loom. Play period games. Make a pioneer toy.

On Friday only, students will be able to attend school taught by a “school marm” in the Village schoolhouse.

Tulsa Symphony – Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 6

Join us for a Saturday morning dress rehearsal with The Tulsa Symphony.   This is a free event.  Downtown parking prices vary from lot to lot.
**There is a Maximum of 25 people allowed.  You are welcome to invite other CC and homeschool friends.  Please include them with your signup total.
**We will have Q and A with the musicians before the rehearsal starts
**Tips from the Education Director, David Carter:
As long as everyone is capable of sitting quietly and relatively still, there is no age minimum. I recommend familiarizing the students with the music several times before attending the rehearsal. Also, since it’s a rehearsal, there can be a fair bit of stopping to work on sections (hopefully by this rehearsal, we’re not stopping much!)
These times may change as we get closer to the event, so keep watch on email/FB for updates
  • 8:50am – meet up at the Stage Door entrance to the Tulsa PAC (just west of E 2nd St and S Cincinnati Ave). David will get us signed in and walk us up to meeting room.
  • 9:00am – Q and A meeting
  • 9:30 – 10:00, musicians leave to setup for rehearsal.  While waiting, we can review orchestra seating from previous cycles.
  • 10am – Rehearsal time is 2.5 hours and we can take a 20 minute break approximately half-way through
  • 12:30pm – End of rehearsal.
This is our second event to schedule with them as The Tulsa Symphony typically uses their in-school programs as teaching and outreach.  Please give them many thanks, maybe have your student(s) send them a thank-you card as well.

Meet Our Sponsored Children: Deborah and Aaron

This year, the families and students of Classical Conversations Downtown Tulsa (CCDT) will be sponsoring two Ugandan orphans through Bless the Children Ministries (BTCM). Our donations will help provide food, shelter, and most of all, a safe place for these precious children to be nurtured, and to learn about God’s love.

Deborah Namukwasa was born December 25, 2015, and is 1.5 years old.

Deborah’s mother died in childbirth and her father abandoned her. An aunt was trying to care for Deborah and her two siblings.[/one_half]

Aaron

Aaron Manzi was born approximately January 1, 2016, and is 1.5 years old.

Aaron was found outside a school gate, completely alone, abandoned, and starving. At 16 months, he could barely crawl.[/one_half_last]

How can I get involved?

The cost to sponsor one child through BTCM is $44 per month. CCDT families and students are encouraged to participate in this project in the following ways:

  • Donate toward the monthly costs of sponsoring Deborah and Aaron.
  • Make a donation to help send our sponsored children a care package at Christmas time.
  • As a family, pray for our two sponsored children, Uganda’s 2.5 million orphans, and the work of orphan outreach ministries like BTCM.
  • Write letters to our sponsored children (details available soon).

Our Uganda Giving Box will be available to receive donations on each Community Day. Look for the Giving Box in Room 203 during Foundations & Essentials. (If you need to make a contribution at another time, please contact Abigail Prescott.)

We will also collect funds to apply toward the sponsorship costs through different fundraising opportunities, such as our Community Day Marketplace, and Moms’ Networking Night. More details on these events will be shared soon.

Other Ways You Can Help

  • Visit Bless the Children Ministries online and sponsor another child, or a member of the Ugandan staff.
  • Volunteer your time to support BTCM’s US operations by helping with fundraising, marketing, or other activities.
  • Join a mission trip! Each year, several Tulsa-area churches sponsor mission trips to serve at the BTCM campus in Mabaale, Uganda. Areas of need may include: medical outreach, educational services, construction projects, and more. BTCM also offers summer internships for college students who have a heart for serving orphans.

Why Uganda?

Uganda is a nation of children with a history of poverty, corruption, and war that is ripe for investment and hope.

  • Half of Uganda’s 38 million people are under the age of 15.
  • 45% of Ugandans are Protestant, 39% are Roman Catholic, 14% are Muslim.
  • The total fertility rate is 5.8 children per woman, one of the highest in the world.
  • Uganda’s maternal mortality rate is 16 times that of the United States.
  • Over 1.4 million Ugandans are living with HIV/AIDS — the 10th highest rate in the world.
  • 14% of children under the age of 5 are underweight.
  • Uganda has 2.5 million orphans.

What is Bless the Children Ministries?

Founded in 2008, BTCM’s mission is to care for orphans and vulnerable children through discipleship, Christian education, and health care. As part of its ministry, BTCM provides: a Children’s Home for orphaned and vulnerable children; a Sponsorship Program to meet ongoing needs; and a Christian school to provide Christ-centered education and relational discipleship. BTCM strives to help these children grow to be Godly leaders that will impact their communities.

CCMT Announces 2018 Production

The next CCMT production will be The Wizard of Oz, with performances on April 13th and 14th, 2018. If you’re interested in participating, please read on for more information.

CCMT BACKGROUND

Classical Conversations Musical Theater (CCMT) was founded in 2012 in response to a demand by the local CC chapters for a theater program.  We are now in our sixth year of production.  Previous performances include The Music Man, Jr. (2013), Beauty and the Beast, Jr. (2014), Aladdin, Jr. (2015), Peter Pan, Jr. (2016), and Willy Wonka, Jr. (2017) .  The program continues to grow; the cast of our production of Peter Pan, Jr. was 105 students!  CCMT is open to any student enrolled in CC in the Tulsa area, ages 4 through Challenge IV.

WIZARD OF OZ WORKSHOP

Our journey will begin with a wonderful Wizard of Oz Workshop on Saturday, September 30th. Please plan to attend, even if you’re not completely sure that you want to participate.  And please invite your CC friends to attend, too!  This production requires a lot of dancers – if you love to dance, please come!
At the workshop, everybody will have the opportunity to learn a song, learn a bit of choreography, practice some lines with a coach, and find out more about the audition process.  Each student will go home with a CD of the music, and scenes from the script to practice for their audition.
Details of the workshop are as follows:–
  • WHO: Everybody interested in The Wizard of Oz, even if you haven’t completely decided that you want to participate
  • WHEN: Saturday, September 30th, 9:00a.m. – 2:00p.m.
  • WHERE: Tulsa Bible Church (5838 S. Sheridan Rd, Tulsa; 61st & Sheridan)
  • COST: $20 per actor (with a maximum of $50 per family), which will include lunch!

Our lunch menu is: hamburger or cheeseburger, fruit, chips, and a bottled water.  If your child has allergies and cannot eat this menu, then please send them with a lunch from home.  Just please remember, we have a strict no-nut policy!

WIZARD OF OZ AUDITIONS

Following the workshop, the auditions should be a piece of cake!  Auditions will be held on Friday, October 6th, and Saturday, October 7th.  Exact times will be announced later, but the first round will be on Friday evening.  Don’t worry, everybody will receive a part! For those of you with younger cast members (ages 8 and under), we’d still love to have your littles audition just to get some practice.  If they don’t want to, that’s okay!  But if they’d like to try for a speaking part in the show, they do need to audition.

REGISTRATION

Anybody who would like to participate in the CCMT Wizard of Oz needs to register via one of two handy Google Sheets.

DIRECTORS NEEDED

We are in need of a few key volunteers, including: Costuming Director, Set Building Director and Set Design Director. If you are interested in one of these positions, please let us know. We’re happy to discuss details before you commit. And as a little thank-you, these directors will receive a $125 production fee discount.

AFTER THE AUDITIONS

A rough outline of our post-audition schedule is as follows (all practices and performances will take place at Tulsa Bible Church unless otherwise noted):
  • November: Gather the cast together for a “read through” (read through the script) and “sing through” (sing through all the songs); location TBD
  • Early January:  Rehearsals begin. Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Friday evenings, with some possible Saturday rehearsal here and there.  We’re going to try to keep our youngest cast members’ rehearsals (ages 8 or 9 and younger) to just one day a week…either Tuesdays or Fridays.
  • Friday and Saturday, April 13th and 14th: Performance Weekend!  CCMT Performing The Wizard of Oz at Tulsa Bible Church!

PRODUCTION FEE

The cast member production fee will be graduated, based on how many cast members you have in your family.  The first participant will be $125, the second $100, the third $75, and all additional cast members will be $65.  This fee will include: music and script, of course, but also your costume (with the exception of shoes and undergarments), t-shirt, picture, and the dinner provided between performances on April 7th.  Half of the production fee will be due at your audition; the other half is due at our first practice in January.

Band & String Orchestra Classes for Homeschool Families!

Once-a-week Classes with levels from Beginning Band & Strings through Advanced Classes
4 Locations: SE Tulsa (near Broken Arrow and Bixby), SW Tulsa (near Jenks), Tulsa (near 51st & Memoria), and Owasso
Oklahoma Homeschool Bands has been providing instruction for Oklahoma homeschool students for 18 years. Founded in the OKC-area, OHB expanded into the Tulsa area six years ago and added string orchestra classes to our Tulsa-area offerings three years ago. Our Tulsa-area director has 31 years of experience teaching all levels of band and orchestra classes in public schools and was the Oral Roberts University Wind Ensemble director for 5 years as well as the ORU orchestra director for 3 years. In our beginning classes, students do NOT need to have had any prior music instruction. Those classes start from the very beginning. As for our intermediate and advanced classes, perhaps you have a child who takes private lessons on an instrument, or who played in band or orchestra in school before joining the homeschool community, and would like to play in a band or a string orchestra with other homeschool students. Major concerts are held three times a year and additional performing opportunities are also offered.

Foundations Resource Changes in 2018

As many of you already know, Classical Conversations Inc. is in the final stages of a major upgrade to Foundations program materials. The enhanced Foundations curriculum will provide greater ease of use, incorporate the most current educational updates, improve accuracy and consistency of information, integrate more effectively with our Challenge program, and feature a fresh and functional layout. Unlike previous updates to the Foundations guide, the 5th Edition changes will render all other editions of the Guide obsolete. Fifth Edition changes will also impact some ancillary products, such as the audio CDs, flashcards, etc. (There are currently no plans to update the Essentials Guide until 2019-2020 or later.)

Beginning in 2018, the following products will be changed to correspond with the 5th Edition upgrade:

  1. Consult the list above before buying resources for 2017-2018. If an item is scheduled to be updated, you may wish to wait until the new version is available.
  2. Buy a 4th Edition Foundations Guide from the CC Bookstore and you will receive a $25 discount off your purchase of the 5th Edition. (Other specials may be available, so ask the Book Rep for the best deal.)
  3. Buy used from other families. To find available materials locally, check out our Used Curriculum Forum.
  4. Shop at the Parent Practicum Bookstore. The staff should be versed in which resources will be upgraded.

Challenge B Mock Trial Results

Congratulations to our Challenge B students — Vasilia Boyaci, ILona Cunningham, and Abbie Lay — for their success at Mock Trial!

From Cecil Cunningham, Challenge B Director:

Our combined CCDT-BA team did really well in Mock Trial.  Our Team One (including Vasilia Boyaci and Abbie Lay) in the morning won the Prosecution but lost on the defense.  They came up short overall by .5 points Owasso 181.75 to CCDT-BA 181.25 points. Team Two (including ILona Cunningham) won Prosecution but lost on the defense also.  Their point total was 170 CCDT-BA to 159 Owasso.

So for the day, the CCDT-BA Team won with a total points of 351.25 vs. Owasso with 340.75.

I am so proud of all of them.  They gave it their all and have been working hard for 2 months. Please congratulate Abbie, Vasilia, and ILona for doing a great job at Mock Trial.

Six Flags Read to Succeed Program

Service Project: Laura Dester Children’s Shelter

As some of you may already be aware, the OK Department of Human Services (DHS) has been working to close Oklahoma’s two emergency children’s shelters in order to move toward foster care placement for every child in state custody. The shelter in Oklahoma City has been closed for more than a year, but Tulsa’s Laura Dester Shelter remains in operation due to the long-term needs of the children living there. Most of these kids are teenagers, with serious medical or emotional needs that make finding a permanent foster home a special challenge.

Unfortunately, the publicity behind the scheduled closure of the Laura Dester Shelter has led much of the public — and many volunteer organizations — to believe the shelter is already closed, so donations, volunteers, and other support have dried up to almost nothing. Luckily, some amazing local citizens have stepped in to spread the word about these needs and help bring these special kids a wonderful Christmas!Each child at the shelter has already been sponsored for Christmas gifts (praise God!) but there are ongoing needs we are asking our community families to help address. (See the list below.)

Please bring some of the following items with you to community day THIS THURSDAY. The donated items will be collected and delivered to the Shelter next week. (If you aren’t able to make it to the store, but would like to donate money, we will use any donated funds to purchase items on your behalf.)
